Dr Bernd C Schmid, PhD
FRANZCOG
Specialist Gynaecologist
Dr. Bernd C. Schmid is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist practising in Robina on the Gold Coast. He combines more than two decades of international clinical experience with one of the most extensive academic and research records of any gynaecologist on the Gold Coast — a combination that brings genuine benefit to every woman who walks into his consulting room.
European training, Australian practice
Born in the western Austrian Alps, Dr Schmid earned his medical degree and completed his specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Medical University of Vienna, one of the oldest and most respected medical schools in the world, founded in 1365. He went on to achieve the Venia Docendi — the European academic rank equivalent to Associate Professor in Australia — and refined his surgical expertise as a consultant at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg in Germany.
In 2013, Dr Schmid moved to Australia for a fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and earned his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) in 2014. He has since held consultant positions at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne, and Gold Coast University Hospital, and undertook extensive surgical training at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney under the mentorship of Professor Neville Hacker, one of Australia's most distinguished gynaecological oncologists.
A clinician-scientist — and why it matters for you
Dr Schmid is also an internationally published researcher. His work in gynaecological oncology, ovarian and breast cancer, and obstetric safety has been cited more than 1,000 times across 38 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals. He has held academic appointments as Associate Professor at the Medical University of Vienna and Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and the University of New South Wales, and he continued to train the next generation of gynaecological surgeons at the Gold Coast University Hospital.
This research background directly benefits his patients. It means decisions in your care are shaped by the latest evidence, and that complex or unusual presentations are met with the analytical rigour of a scientist alongside the judgement of an experienced surgeon.
Dr Schmid is perhaps best known for his work on severe postpartum haemorrhage — one of the leading causes of maternal death worldwide. He pioneered the use of a haemostatic combat gauze, originally developed for battlefield trauma, to control life-threatening bleeding after childbirth. His published research on this technique has influenced obstetric practice internationally and has helped save the lives of women in situations where conventional treatments had failed. It is the kind of contribution that few practising clinicians anywhere can claim.
Minimally invasive and robotic surgery
Dr Schmid was among the early (2014) adopters of Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery in Australia and offers advanced laparoscopic procedures for endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, adenomyosis, and hysterectomy at Gold Coast Private Hospital. His surgical philosophy prioritises minimally invasive techniques, faster recovery, and the best possible long-term outcomes.
A practice built on listening
Fluent in English and German, Dr Schmid is known for taking the time to listen, to explain diagnoses clearly, and to involve each patient in the decisions about her care. He is also deeply committed to providing surgical outreach to rural communities across Australia, ensuring women outside the major cities have access to the same standard of care as those in metropolitan centres.
Whether you are seeking routine gynaecological care, a second opinion, or management of a complex condition, you can be confident you are in experienced and compassionate hands.
